ANTICOSTI – THE ISLAND

The enthralling island of Anticosti has been described as remote, stunningly wild and lost in time. Located in the heart of Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence, and inhabited by only 200 souls, the 7 943 square kilometer island is a unique and untouched paradise located just shy of North 50.

The island is a place rich in history, both recent and from millennia past. It’s limestone cliffs lined with fossils make it a premiere world location to study the geological history of our planet. Anticosti is designated as a "UNESCO World Heritage Site".

The island’s 530 km of rugged coastline are surrounded by treacherous waters that have bared witness to the loss of an estimated 400 ships throughout the centuries.

“The surrounding reefs are otherwise virgin and untouched as very few have had the opportunity to dive Anticosti’s waters. The dive season is very short so fewer than 100 divers a year will have the privilege of exploring its mythical waters.

13 species of whales, 3 species of seals, not to mention numerous fish and sea creatures, either visit Anticosti’s water or call them home. Big and small, Anticosti has it all!

The island’s underwater realm is truly enchanting and uniquely diveres. However it is the feeling Anticosti leaves you with that entices you to return. The 166 000 deer and incredible wildlife that roam the island might also have the same effect.

WHO WE ARE

Many know us as the owners of N2Pix and professional image-makers. Others know us as the past owners of a PADI 5-Star IDC Center, as seasoned dive trainers or as guest speakers.

We have lived in Quebec all our lives and can confirm that Anticosti remains a place where few have set foot. It is an island wrapped in an aura of mystery. A place that seems too remote, almost untouchable.

Yet, in 2020, we finally decided to embark on the journey, and yes it can be quite the journey, to explore and dive Anticosti’s mythical waters.

   By ferry

Traveling to Anticosti by ferry is the most budget-friendly way to access the island. You can embark on the ferry from 3 more easily accessible locations in Quebec; Rimouski located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence or Sept-Iles and Havre-St-Pierre on the North Shore (see map). The ferry is a hybrid cargo/passenger ferry. Vehicles are considered as cargo and must fit in a container to avoid very hefty costs.

The location from which you choose to embark will determine how many days you can stay on the island since the ferry only visits twice a week. Kindly note that the ferry schedule is not guaranteed and can change according to weather. Plan on being flexible.

The complete ferry schedule is at: http://relaisnordik.com/en/
